Well it’s time for a new year everyone! I am looking forward to seeing so many of you at upcoming shows this year. It’s like going to a family reunion, my fitness family reunion! I can’t believe 2006 has come and gone in the blink of an eye. I have to admit I get so excited with all the possibilities and great opportunities just waiting for us in this new year. This open door to 2007 gives us all a chance to reflect on 2006 and what we want to do to improve, it gives us a time to refresh ourselves and have our new goals in front of us and ready to tackle! I do want to say thank you to everyone and to Hardfitness for making this section a success. And as always, I welcome any advice you might have or things you might want to share.  Train hard, stay focused and let’s look forward to 2007!

Confused about Cardio
I have read so many different things about cardio and what I should and should not be doing, but the one thing I can’t seem to find is how to break up my cardio sessions or if I should at all. What do you do as far as cardio goes when getting ready for a show?

Jamie, there really are different variations of cardio. It really depends on preference and what your goals might be. I highly suggest working with a trainer (that has worked with contest clients in the past) to figure out what is going to be best for your body.  Sometimes, it might be trial and error based on what your body might respond to. What has worked best for me, when training for a show is, 45min to 1hr pre-breakfast cardio. Then after my workout in the evening I do another 30 to 45 min. In the first month or so of my contest prep this is pretty much standard.  After that it can vary depending on where my body is from week to week, that is why I highly suggest working with a trainer.  If you want to mix up your cardio as well check out the ask misty section, cardio poop out, in issue #19.
