My First National Show Experience and Taking 2nd.
by Alexandra Galvez

2005 and I had my mind set on Jr. Nationals, my first national show and I had no idea what to expect. I did lots of reading and went back and looked at what the previous winners looked like. I had an idea of how I wanted to look on stage it was a matter of pulling it all together.

I began cleaning my diet 13 weeks out from the show. Though during my offseason I stuck to a fairly clean diet. I wanted to give myself plenty of time to change things as I went along.

First thing I did when preparing for Jr. Nationals was to focus on specific physique and bodyparts that needed improvements. I wanted to add overall size, shape and thickness to my calves. This is one body part that I learned to love. I knew that if I wanted to see improvements in this area I needed to blast them. There was times that I would hate getting out of bed in fear of the soreness that I would feel with the first step. The other area that I wanted to work on was creating a slight outer sweep and improves overall definition to my quads; my hamstrings create full sweep from glute to attachment at knee. I did this by hitting them once a week really hard and than again doing a few sets

MY WEIGHT TRAINING LOOKED SOMEWHAT LIKE THIS:
MONDAY CHEST, ABS, SIDE DELTS, FRONT DELTS
TUESDAY BACK, CALVES
WEDNESDAY QUADS, LIGHT HAMSTRINGS
THURSDAY SHOULDERS, ABS, CALVES
FRIDAY ARMS, ABS
SATURDAY HAMSTRINGS, LIGHT QUADS
SUNDAY CARDIO, ABS, CALVES

CARDIO :
FOR THE FIRST 8 WEEKS I WOULD DO 5 CARDIO SESSIONS PER WEEK AT 40 MINUTES I was still building muscle so the intensity was medium. As I got closer to the show I would do a two-session split on my cardio morning 40 mins and evening 45 minutes.

AS FOR MY DIET I USE A VARIABLE CALORIE ROTATION.
EXAMPLE
-DAY 1 -- 5 PROTEINS AND 4 CARBS
-DAY 2 -- 5 PROTEINS AND 4 CARBS
-DAY 3 -- 6 PROTEINS AND 3 CARBS

As I got closer to the show I would change my diet to a high protein low carb.

What is most crucial is that i get a minimum of 100 - 150 grams of protein per day to support current muscle AND new muscle growth while sustaining fat burning.

This means Ii eat from the time Ii wake up to just about one to one and half-hours prior to bedtime. To do this on my low carb days (day 3), Ii would need to cut my carb portions in half so Ii can turn 3 carbs for the day into six [half] carb meals.

As for as supplements I used
CHROMIUM PICOLINATE, MULTI-VITAMIN, CALCIUM, VITAMIN C, GLUTAMINE, PROTEIN POWDER GOOD WHEY WITH NO CARB AND NO FAT AND LITTLE SUGAR, AND YES I WOULD USE A FAT BURNERS EPHEDRINE WAS WHAT WORKED BEST FOR ME.

The one thing I realized when getting ready for my first National Show was that not only did I have to spend hours training and preparing my meals but finding time to work on my posing and quarter turns. I started working on my posing 4 weeks out from the show. 1 hour 4 days a week.

As for the travel I would like to say that my travel was not the best. I would recommend that you have someone else help you in planning your flight arrangements. As a competitor you have your mind on other things and since most of us are operating on low to no carbs it’s fair to assume that you might miss your flight. The day came for me to leave for Chicago and I realized ½ hour before my flight was scheduled to leave that I had misread my departure time so needless to say I had to fly stand by all the way to Chicago and arriving the next morning at 6:00 AM. I made it with one seat available and very tired.

When it came to Friday night and the one piece prejudging I did something a little different with my water depleting in fear of spilling over for the Saturday morning prejudging I didn't carb load enough. I stepped on stage tight but not full enough. I'm still working on cutting water and filling my muscles but finishing in 2nd at my first National show was a great accomplishment. There were many beautiful women and it was an honor to have finished in the top 5 let alone take 2nd.
I came away from Jr. Nationals more hungry and confident. I'm working on the areas that the judges gave me and of course focusing on the last 4-3 days which is very critical in how much you want to deplete. I will bring the best package I can to stage, one that will earn me my pro status.
